Social Security Number
U.S. citizens can apply for a social security number at the Consular Section. Legal permanent residents and legal aliens have to provide documentation proving that they require a Social Security card.
Requirements:
SS-5 application form when applying for an original/duplicate/corrected card or a change of information.
- Proof of identity (U.S. passport, driver’s license, employee ID card…)
Proof of U.S. citizenship (U.S. passport, U.S. birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth abroad, certificate of naturalization)
Only originals of documents listed above should be submitted and will be returned to the applicant without delay. The new Social Security card will be mailed directly to the applicant’s address.
Applicants age 12 or older who have never been assigned a Social Security number before must apply in person and be interviewed. First time applicants age 12 or older born in the U.S. need to provide a statement explaining why they never applied for a Social Security number before AND submit proof that they left the U.S. as a young child.
Hours:
Thursday 8:30-11:30am and 1:30-3pm. No appointment is necessary.
Fees:
No processing fees are charged for services related to federal benefits.
