Step by Step

Once you have verified that you are eligible to apply for a visa in Luxembourg (see Who Can Apply), and have scheduled an interview (see Scheduling an Interview), you are ready to prepare your application.

You must present all your documents in person.  The U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg does not accept visa applications by mail!

  1. Verify the type of visa you will need--B1/B2, F1/M1, J1, I, C1/D, H/L, E1/E2, etc. (see Non-Immigrant Visa Types) Please make sure you prepare the correct documentation according to the visa type.
  2. Complete form DS-156: NONIMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION in English -- aussi disponible comme DS-156 DEMANDE DE VISA DE SEJOUR TEMPORAIRE en français -- for any type of non-immigrant visa, one form per person regardless of age.  These forms MUST be completed online and printed with the barcode. Handwritten or typed applications will not be accepted.
  3. Male applicants age 16-45 must also complete form DS-157 SUPPLEMENTAL NONIMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION in English (Adobe Acrobat format) -- aussi disponible comme DS-157 FORMULAIRE COMPLEMENTAIRE DE DEMANDE DE VISA NONIMMIGRANT en français (Microsoft Word format).
  4. Some visa categories require additional application forms, please make sure to verify before coming for your appointment (see Non-Immigrant Visa Types).
  5. Each applicant must present a valid passport.
  6. Holders of other than Luxembourg passports must present proof of residence (carte de séjour, récépissé de la commune, titre de légitimation).
  7. One photograph for each applicant regardless of age, including children and babies.  See photo requirements.
  8. Each applicant must pay a fee of US$131 (or the equivalent in euros).  This fee must be paid at the time of application and IN CASH ONLY.  The fee is mandatory and NOT REFUNDABLE in case of visa refusal.  The application cannot be processed without payment.  For some nationalities and visa types an additional "reciprocity fee" may be required.
  9. Each applicant must submit evidence of an intention to return to their place of residence outside the United States.  You must submit evidence that you have a residence abroad and have no intention of abandoning it.
  10. You also need to show social, financial, and economic ties to Luxembourg, such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, livrets de familles and similar documents.  You must also prove that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in the U.S., such as an employment contract, pay stubs or bank statements.
  11. For business travel, you must provide a letter from you employer.
  12. All documents must be originals, no copies are accepted.  Documents will be returned after the application interview.
  13. Bring all your documents, including your passport, and the cash dollars/euros for the fee to your appointment.
  14. Visa applicants are strongly encouraged to bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the visa interview to allow return of their passports by mail. Luxembourg postage requires Euro 1,00 for return inside Luxembourg and Euro 1,50 for return to any of the surrounding countries (Belgium, France, and Germany). The envelope will not be registered. The main post office in Luxembourg city center, 25 rue Aldringen (10 minutes walk from the Embassy).

    Applicants who have urgent travel plans or who wish to pick up their passports rather than have them mailed should make that request at the time of the interview.

The Embassy does not provide internet connection to visa applicants. Following internet cafés provide free internet access and use of a printer in Luxembourg City (most require users to register first and to pay for printed copies):
